As November’s midterm elections loom, President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to struggle, reaching a new record low in a new Focaldata/Financial Times poll released over Labor Day weekend.

The poll, released on Sunday, Sept. 6, found that only 32% of Americans approved of Trump’s job performance, a three-point drop from last month’s edition and the lowest the president has seen in Focaldata/Financial Times tracking since it began in May.

Trump’s slip in the most recent poll comes as his approval among Republicans also dropped by two percentage points to 72%, marking a new low, according to the Financial Times.

The president’s continued struggles in the polls come ahead of a vital midterm season as his party seeks to hold slim majorities

in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Focaldata/Financial Times poll was conducted from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2 with 2,178 U.S. adults participating.

According to the poll, only 17% of respondents approved of Trump’s handling of inflation and the cost of living, while a whopping 69% disapproved of the president's performance on the issue.

Americans’ unhappiness with Trump’s job on the economy comes as gas prices in the United States show no sign of dropping. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gas was $4.15 on Tuesday, Sept. 8, up 13 cents from a week earlier and nearly $1 higher than it was at the same time in 2025.

Trump’s unpopularity a boost for Democrats, poll shows

Trump's unpopularity with the American public could prove to bolster Democrats' chances of retaking one or both chambers of Congress in November.

According to the latest Focaldata/Financial Times poll, Democrats lead the GOP by seven percentage points in a generic Congressional ballot. That performance shows a one-percentage-point improvement compared to the same poll conducted in August.
