Several big names, including Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon, were detained Thursday, Sept. 24, during a protest in New York City.
Photos and video show the stars in handcuffs as police removed them from a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of his speech addressing the United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan. Multiple outlets, including PIX11 and the New York Daily News, reported over 100 people were arrested.
Einbinder and Sarandon were among many public figures and politicians removed from the demonstration, such as Cynthia Nixon, comedian Caleb Hearon, City Councilman Chi Osse and Democratic Congressional nominee Darializa Avila Chevalie.
According to PIX11, at least three protests were planned against Netanyahu
amid Israel's war with Gaza and ongoing conflict in the Middle East. A number of UN delegates also walked out of the session when Netanyahu began speaking that afternoon.
Netanyahu responded in his speech, calling them "moral cowards."
USA TODAY reached out to representatives for Einbinder, Sarandon and Nixon, and the New York Police Department for comment.
This comes days after arrests were made at a separate New York City protest ahead of President Donald Trump's UN address, with state Sen. Erik Bottcher telling PIX11, “People want to see their leaders stand up and speak out, and not go along with what’s happening [at the White House]."
During his speech, Trump called the International Criminal Court, which has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Israeli leaders, an “out of control” organization and called on members to leave the group.
This isn't the first time celebrities at the protest have spoken out against Netanyahu. Sarandon, a staunch supporter of Palestine, recently revealed her advocacy has cost her jobs in Hollywood.
"I've still had movies taken away recently, because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still," she said in a press conference at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 6. "But that's the power structure. I think [among] the people, certainly internationally, I feel welcome."
The "Thelma and Louise" star added that people in "very strongly held positions" in the industry have "not relaxed their feelings towards me."
