What is the Elf on the Shelf?
The Elf on the Shelf is a popular holiday tradition that helps children get into the Christmas mood while causing some mischief and going viral online.
However, the original Elf on the Shelf involved in the tradition is about 10 inches tall, and much smaller than its 5-foot counterparts.
In the days leading up to Christmas, Santa Claus sends "Scout Elves" to children's homes to watch how they behave and tell Santa whether they've been naughty or nice. But after the children fall asleep, the elves travel back to the North Pole and return to a different spot in the house.
Sometimes, they can cause a bit of trouble when they return, and parents have posted videos online showing the wacky situations the elves get themselves into.
The tradition is based on the children's book "The Elf on the Shelf" written by twin sisters Christa Pitts and Chanda A. Bell, who always had one of Santa's elves hanging out at their house, according to USA TODAY's previous reporting.
