Spoiler alert: This story contains details from the Season 4 finale of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV.
As Keeley Jones observes in the conclusion of “Ted Lasso” Season 4, “everything’s changing around us constantly,” and “it’s happening really fast.”
The finale, titled “Being Alive,” welcomes back familiar faces like Ted’s former player Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) and Nathan Shelley (Nick Mohammed), now coach of Poland’s national football team. It also introduces several instances of change for the comedy’s characters as some reevaluate their priorities, following the death of pub owner Mae Green (Annette Badland) in the penultimate episode.
“We laugh, we hurt, we fall, we get back up. We’re a mess,” majority club owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah
Waddingham) tells the series’ titular character (Jason Sudeikis). “And that is… fantastic because being messy just means being alive. And we could all do with being a bit more alive.”
Here’s where the characters ended up in the season finale.
Ted Lasso reveals how his dad died, becomes assistant manager of Richmond’s women’s team
Following Mae’s death, anxieties are clearly swirling through the mind of Ted’s son, Henry (Grant Feely). When Henry asks how his paternal grandfather died, Ted confirms the story relayed, that his dad died from a head injury after tumbling down steps.
“Hey, don’t worry. I’m good on stairs,” Ted assures him. “You ain’t going to lose me anytime soon. I promise.”Later in the episode, Ted decides to be honest with his son and reveals that his dad died by suicide.
In an effort to be more present for Henry, Ted asks to be demoted to assistant manager of the Lady Greyhounds, and Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) is named as his replacement.

Roy Kent leaves Richmond to manage Chelsea
Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), the gruff but good-natured boyfriend of an expecting Keeley (Juno Temple), accepts a job managing his former team, Chelsea, and Rebecca does not take the news well.
“You are putting so much pressure on yourself, moving there,” she tells Roy. “You are taking the most massive risk.”
“I know,” Roy says. “But we’ve got to take risks, haven’t we, Rebecca? Otherwise, what’s the f------ point?
“I deserve for good things to happen in my life. Don’t I?” Roy continues, recalling Rebecca’s earlier advice that he learn to “get out of your own way, man.”
“OK,” Rebecca relents, realizing she’s been defeated with her own sentiment. “But know that when you get bored of Chelsea’s unlimited budget and endless resources, you are always welcome to come crawling back to A.F.C. Richmond.”

Rebecca Welton retains Richmond majority ownership, gets engaged
With the help of Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Rebecca is able to foil a plan by Zelda Southport (Tracey Ullman) to secretly gain majority stake of Richmond. Mae’s 2% slice of the pie, which she bequeathed to Rebecca, keeps Rebecca as controlling owner with 51% of the shares.
Following a chat with Ted, Rebecca realizes that she wants to embrace all aspects of her relationship with Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn) – even the imperfect bits.
“Marry me,” she blurts out to Matthijs in her office, catching the pilot off-guard.

“I’m done being a marriage hater. I actually really loved being married. It was just to the wrong person,” Rebecca explains, reflecting on her marriage to Rupert (the late Anthony Head). “I want to stop worrying about what might be wrong and just start living my life, with you. If you’d like to do that, with me.”
Matthijs gets on one knee and accepts.
