The fireworks display in Washington, D.C., to celebrate America's 250th anniversary sparked a new record.
President Donald Trump had promised on social media that after his July 4th speech on the National Mall, spectators would witness "what will be, the LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY, right here in our Nation's Capital."
Thunderstorms delayed the "Salute to America" Independence Day event – Trump's speech began at 11 p.m. ET, an hour later than planned – but the subsequent fireworks display set a Guinness World Record. The record-keeping organization recently deemed the event the largest-ever such display, with 840,537 fireworks.
The display lit up "the National Mall and the Potomac River, and miles around in a 40-minute spectacular," Freedom
250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said in a statement to USA TODAY.
Freedom 250, the quasi-governmental nonprofit Trump created to carry out the country's 250th anniversary events, and Northern Virginia-based contractor Event Strategies Inc. were mentioned by Guinness, as was New Castle, Pennsylvania-headquartered Pyrotecnico Inc.
"This historic display shattered the previous global benchmark and stands as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and pride as we begin our nation’s next 250 years," Alvarez said. "Freedom 250 is honored to have brought this moment to millions of Americans, and we thank everyone who made it possible.”
Pyrotecnico and Freedom 250 had a goal to set a new record, surpassing the previous record from 2016 set by Iglesia Ni Cristo in the Philippines, according to the Pyrotecnico website.“Our team worked through extreme heat and long days to create a show that lived up to this once-in-a-generation moment," Pyrotecnico president Rocco Vitale said on the company's website. "What we wanted was for people to walk away believing they saw the best fireworks display of their lives, a proud, patriotic memory to pass down for generations.”
