Everton has reached a deal with AS Monaco for United States starFolarin Balogun, according to multiple reports.
The Athletic reported on Monday, Aug. 31 that the two clubs "have reached an agreement" with soccer reporter Fabrizio Romano adding that the 25-year-old will travel for his medical examination on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Both sources said the deal is worth approximately $52.3 million (€45 million) with an additional $5.8 million (€5 million) in add-ons.
Balogun made a name for himself as the USMNT's leading scorer at this summer's World Cup. He had three goals for the United States, including two in the tournament opener, a 4-1 win over Paraguay. Mauricio Pochettino's squad needed players to step up after captain Christian Pulisic was injured
in the first match.
Balogun also made headlines when he was handed a red card in the round of 32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which meant he had to sit out the next match against Belgium. FIFA rescinded the red card and said he could play. It was a decision that drew immense criticism and the Red Devils mocked it when they beat the United States.
The New York-born, London-raised forward joined AS Monaco in 2023. He appeared in 91 matches and had 31 goals for the Ligue 1 club. He came up in Arsenal's academy and made his debut for the first team in 2020. He also spent time on loan with Middlesbrough and Stade de Reims.
Everton has a win and a draw in Premier League play so far this season. They lost Iliman Ndiaye to Tottenham in the transfer window, which closes in the EPL on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 11 p.m. local time.
