As summer winds down, Pittsburgh is celebrating Labor Day, good food and football.
Sept. 7 marks Labor Day, a federal holiday celebrated every September on the first Monday of the month to recognize America's labor movement. Time is also winding down toward the Pittsburgh Steeler's first 2026 season game
, slated for Sunday, Sept. 13 at Acrisure Stadium against the Atlanta Falcons, and fans are celebrating the season in advance.Whether you're planning to spend Labor Day visiting events around Pittsburgh or just want to know how to adjust your routine with holiday closures, here's you're guide to Labor Day 2026 in Pittsburgh.
Labor Day weekend events in Pittsburgh
Various events are scheduled to take place over Labor Day weekend — some in honor of the holiday, others to mark the end of summer
and others to celebrate ahead of the Steelers beginning their 2026 season. Here's when and where they'll be:
- Kickoff and Rib Festival: Thursday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. during weekend at Acrisure Stadium
- Golden Age Jazz Fest: Thursday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 6 at Golden Age Beer Company; times vary (see online schedule)
- Soul Food Festival: Friday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 6, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in Downtown Pittsburgh
- R&B Fest: Saturday, Sept. 5, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Enclave in Pittsburgh's South Side
- PITT Paddle: Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6 in Millvale. See race schedule at PITT Paddle's website.
- Veterans Place 12th Annual Cornhole Classic: Sunday, Sept. 6; doors open at 10 a.m. See online registration details here.
- Steelers Run Walk: Monday, Sept. 7, 8 a.m. at Acrisure Stadium. See online registration details here.
- Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade: Monday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m., beginning at Centre Avenue and moving to Grant Street, then going down Boulevard of the Allies before finishing in front of the Steelworkers Building.
- Labor Day Car Cruise at Deer Lakes Park: Monday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Deer Lakes Park in Tarentum.
Labor Day road closures in Pittsburgh
There will be road closures ahead of and through Labor Day for the various events happening over the holiday weekend, according to the city. Here's when and where they are:
- Art Rooney and General Robinson: Now to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8
- Liberty Avenue between Commonwealth and Stanwix Street; Stanwix Street between Liberty Avenue and Boulevard of the Allies; and Fourth Avenue between Stanwix Street and Wood Street: 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 to 3 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7
- North Shore Drive at Casino Way to Mazeroski Way to General Robinson Street to River Avenue: 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7
- Centre Avenue at Crawford Street to Sixth Avenue to Fifth Avenue to Grant Street to Boulevard of the Allies: 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7
Are Pittsburgh city facilities open on Labor Day?
CitiPark recreation centers, Healthy Active Living Centers, Schenley Ice Rink and Mellon Tennis Bubble will be closed on Sept. 7.
The following pools will be open on Sept. 7 for the final day of the season:
- Bloomfield
- Highland
- Jack Stack
- Magee
- Moore
- Ream
Adult lap swim will run from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and pools will be open for family swim from 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Spray parks will also be open on Sept. 7.
Is Pittsburgh parking free on Labor Day?
On-street and off-street Pittsburgh Parking Authority meters will be free on Labor Day, and parking garages managed by Pittsburgh Parking Authority will be programmed for holiday rates.
Is there trash pickup in Pittsburgh on Labor Day?
There is no trash or recycling pickup on Labor Day. Instead, the schedule will shift by one day for the remainder of the week, meaning collection will take place one day later than normal through Sept. 12.
All city recycling drop-off locations except for the Strip District location will be closed for Labor Day.
