With a little over two months until Election Day on Nov. 3, a new poll shows where every statewide race stands, with Democrats leading only one and closing the gap in the others.
In the nationally watched race, the Texas Public Opinion Research's Aug. 27 poll
shows Democratic state Rep. James Talarico leads Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race by 6 points, 48% to 42%, which is outside the margin of error.The poll surveyed 1,000 likely Texas voters from August 21 to August 23 with a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
Here's a quick breakdown of where the statewide race in Texas stands.
James Talarico leads Ken Paxton in Texas Senate by 6 points
Overall, Talarico (48%) leads Paxton (42%) by six points in the U.S. Senate race, with 7% of voters still undecided. Libertarian
Ted Brown received 1% of the vote.
Breaking it down further, independents are breaking for Talarico by a 21-point margin — 51% to 31% — with 14% undecided.
The poll also shows Paxton leads with white voters and voters age 55 and older, while Talarico leads with Black voters, Latino voters, younger voters, college-educated voters and women.
Gov. Greg Abbott leads Gina Hinojosa in Texas governor's race
Republican Gov. Abbott (49%) leads Democratic state Rep. Hinojosa (42%) by seven points in the governor's race, with 6% of voters still undecided. Libertarian Pat Dixon received 1% of the vote, as does independent candidate Jenn Mack Raphoon.
The poll also shows that Abbott has a net job approval of zero — 48% approve of his performance as governor and 48% disapprove.
Nathan Johnson trails behind Mayes Middleton in Texas AG race
Republican state Sen. Middleton (44%) leads Democratic state Sen. Johnson (41%) by three points in the state's attorney general's race, with 10% of voters still undecided. Libertarian Tom Oxford and independent Omer Khwaja each received 1% of the vote.
The poll also shows Middleton leads with white voters and voters age 55 and older, while Johnson leads with Black voters, Latino voters, younger voters, college-educated voters and women.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick leads Vikki Goodwin in Texas lieutenant governor's race
Republican Lt. Gov. Patrick (47%) leads Democratic state Rep. Vikki Goodwin (41%) by six points, with Libertarian Anthony Cristo and independent Jeffrey Marshall each receiving 1% of the vote. Eight percent of voters are still undecided.
White voters break for Patrick, while Black and Latino voters side with Goodwin. Women also break for Goodwin, but both are narrowly tied among college-educated voters.
Republicans lead in Texas comptroller, agriculture and railroad commissioner races
Here's a look at the remaining Texas statewide races and where they stand:
- Comptroller race: Republican Comptroller Don Huffines (43%) leads Democratic state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt (41%) by two points, with 11% of voters remaining undecided.
- Agriculture Commissioner: Republican Nate Sheets (44%) leads Democratic candidate Clayton Tucker (40%) by four points, with 11% of voters remaining undecided.
- Land Commissioner: Republican Dawn Buckingham (44%) leads Democratic candidate Benjamin Flores (40%) by four points, with 10% of voters remaining undecided.
- Railroad Commissioner: Republican Bo French (45%) leads Democrat state Sen. Jon Rosenthal (41%) by four points, with 9% of voters remaining undecided.
