The Washington Commanders appeared to be setting themselves up for a chance to kick a game-winning field goal at the end of overtime in their Week 5 game against the New York Giants.
They never got the chance after an inexplicable mistake by quarterback Jayden Daniels.
With 12 seconds remaining in regulation, Daniels fielded a snap from Commanders center Nick Allegretti on a second-and-8. The third-year quarterback scrambled around the backfield for a few seconds before intentionally going to the ground with eight seconds left.
There was just one problem: Washington had no timeouts remaining and was not able to get aligned to spike the ball before time expired. The Commanders' receivers remained far down the field and never stood a chance to get in position
to stop the clock.
As a result of the gaffe, time expired and the game ended in a 27-all tie. It marked the first NFL tie since the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers played to a 40-all draw in Week 4 of the 2025 season.
The Giants celebrated as time ran out on their opponents and afforded them an opportunity to build upon their lead in the NFC East. Meanwhile, Commanders coach Dan Quinn looked dejected after the mistake and was seen tossing his headset to the ground as time expired.
