By the end of 2025, everything seemed to be lining up for 2026 to be a great year for travel. More routes, increased capacity, and air competition kept fares under pressure.KAYAK projected that domestic flights would cost 3% less and international flights would cost 10% less.
The reality changed abruptly.
By August, U.S. airfares had risen 23.4% in the past year, according to Labor Department data analyzed by the U.S. Travel Association. What happened? A perfect storm formed.
▶ The first blow was the demise of Spirit Airlines. Its departure didn't just mean losing a low-cost carrier; it eliminated one of the competitors that pushed the most with lower prices. When the Justice Department blocked its merger
with JetBlue, it warned that eliminating Spirit would leave tens of millions of travelers exposed to higher fares and fewer options.
Today, Frontier is its closest counterpart, along with smaller-scale companies such as Allegiant, Breeze and Avelo. In fact, Frontier shared more than 100 routes with Spirit and its departure gave it greater pricing power.
▶ The second change is the betting on the traveler who pays more. Airlines are redesigning their cabins and strategies to expand first class, business class, premium economy and seats with extra space. American Airlines announced that it will increase the proportion of premium seats on its single-aisle aircraft from approximately 25% to 40%.
This does not eliminate economy class, but it does reflect an industry focused on generating more revenue per passenger and reduces, proportionately, the space and incentives to offer lower fares.
▶ The third factor is the most unpredictable: the conflict with Iran and the cost of fuel. IATA estimates that jet fuel will average $152 per barrel in 2026, up from $90 in 2025, and that the global airline bill will rise nearly 40%, from $252 billion to $350 billion.
Added to this are airspace closures, canceled flights and diversions around hubs such as Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Each longer route costs more and reduces available connections.
No one can predict with certainty how the conflict will end. But, with less competition, more capacity for premium products and much more expensive fuel, 2026 is on track to close as one of the most expensive years to fly in recent times.
For families, expecting a large reduction in the short term can be a bad strategy. It is advisable to plan more in advance, activate alerts, maintain flexibility in dates and airports, and compare the final price with luggage and fees included. Deals still exist; they just pop up less frequently and last for less time. In this market, preparation is no longer optional; it's the best tool for traveling without breaking the bank.
