Walmart and Sam's Club shoppers will soon have a new way to pay for their items at checkout.
The company announced in an Aug. 21 news release that tap to pay will be added to the payment options at select Walmart and Sam's Club stores beginning Aug. 24, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and to gas stations by mid-2027.
"Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods," the grocer said in the news release. "Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch."
Walmart said customers and members can also add their eligible Walmart, Sam's Club or OnePay
cards to their digital wallets, giving them another way to use their cards. At Sam's Club, members can also use Scan & Go to scan and pay as they shop, skipping the traditional checkout line.

Walmart has long resisted calls from shoppers to add tap to pay to its payment options. Elated Walmart fans took to social media to express relief about the company's decision.
"Finally. Holy moly!" one user wrote on Reddit.
"Finally. They've been leaving money on the table," a second user wrote. "I've witnessed first hand them losing a sale because no tap."
A third user wrote they haven't shopped at Walmart because they didn't support Apple Pay, with a fourth user writing, "I always wondered the reason for its holdout. Thanks for this."
