Six people are dead after two separate planes crashed over Labor Day weekend, including at an airport in San Diego on Monday, Sept. 7.
It comes as five people were killed after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway in Florida on Sept. 6 and as officials search for a small plane that failed to land in Florida on Labor Day.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating both crashes in California.
San Diego plane crash: What we know today
Two people are reportedly dead after a plane crashed at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport just before 5:30 p.m., according to NBC News San Diego and ABC San Diego. San Diego Fire Department said it responded to a small plane on fire on the airport’s runway on Sept. 7.
A spokesperson for the fire department did not immediately respond to
the USA TODAY Network’s questions.
The airport is six miles northeast of the San Diego International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The NTSB described the aircraft as a Cessna 172; According to Ohio University, the plane seats four.
Northwest Fresno plane crash: What we know today
Four people, including two children, died after a plane crashed in the afternoon of Sept. 5, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said they arrived at the 7300 block of N. Blythe Ave. and found a fixed-wing single-engine airplane on fire atop the bluff of the San Joaquin River.
Two children — who may be around 8 and 12 years old, according to Tony Botti, county sheriff’s office spokesperson — were pronounced dead at the scene. Two adults, a man and a woman, were found outside of the plane with severe injuries, Botti said. They were transported to a hospital where they later died.
They were identified as Danna Eady, 41, of Auberry and Craig Eady, 44, of Auberry. Auberry is in Fresno County.
Botti said it’s likely the plane departed from the nearby Sierra Sky Park, though that was not confirmed as of Sept. 7. Details about how long the plane was in the air and its destination weren’t available either.
