Football is back,pumpkin spice drinks are flowing and Halloween is less than two months away, but it may not feel like fall is here quite yet.
Warmer temperatures are sticking around for a few more weeks in Georgia, but the winter season will be here before you know it.
Multiplewinter storms made their way across the Peach State last year, in some cases leaving inches of snow and ice blanketing the northern part of the state.
Could it happen again this year? Here's what predictions from the Farmers' Almanac say.
Expect a wet and stormy winter
According to the Farmers' Almanac 2026/2027 Winter Weather Forecast, published at the beginning of September, El Niño weather conditions will play a big part in the winter experience in Georgia.
The southeast is expected to experience "frequent
storm systems, muddy fields and occasional surges of cold air." In cases where the cold air meets moisture, those storms could produce, sleet, freezing rain or in some cases wet and heavy snow.
This is much more likely for places like Southern California and the Southwest, but is also possible along the Gulf Coast and the Southeast, according to the predictions.
Overall, the weather in the South will be "active and wet" as we near the end of the year.
When could Atlanta see snow?
Some parts of the country may already be gearing up to see the first snow flurries of the year, but if you live in Atlanta or across Georgia, don't hold out hope.
According to the Farmers' Almanac, the Deep South, Gulf Coast and lower Southeast are all categorized as an area that could possibly see snow in later December or into January of 2027, but it is rare and unlikely.
"First snowfall" can be measured one of three ways. Some meteorologists count the first time snow can be observed falling from the sky, even if it melts immediately and doesn't leave anything on the ground. Others start the count with the first measurable snowfall, meaning at least 0.1 inches of snow has accumulated and can be measured. This threshold is used by the National Weather Service for the agency's climate records. The third measurement is of "significant snowfall," typically an inch or more, that could require roads to be cleared or driveways shoveled.
These milestones can even been weeks apart, according to the Farmers' Almanac, skewing when the snow is first counted.
When it comes to the first frost of the year, Georgia may get to experience crunchy grass before Thanksgiving. The Gulf Coast and Deep South could see the first frost around mid-November to early December, according to the Farmers' Almanac.
Significant snow in Georgia last season
Despite predictions of snow in Georgia remaining relatively conservative, the northern part of the state is coming off of an active winter season last year.
Multiple inches of snow fell north of Atlanta at the beginning of 2026, accumulating to nearly 4 inches in some areas including around Lake Lanier. There was also snow in the city, a rare site even for native Atlantans.
