Universities in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County ranked among the best in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2027 list.
The list, which was released on Sept. 22, ranked universities around the country. These schools have a variety of undergraduate programs, as well as master's and doctoral degrees. Their enrollments consist of students from across the US and around the globe.
Pittsburgh-area schools also ranked among the best regional universities, as well as universities with the best undergraduate offerings in business, computer science, engineering and nursing.

Carnegie Mellon tops list for undergrad computer science program
U.S. News ranked universities based on their undergraduate computer science programs. One Pittsburgh university made the list, ranking at the very top:

Pittsburgh undergrad engineering program rankings
U.S. News scored universities based on their undergraduate engineering program offerings. Two Pittsburgh universities made the list:
- Carnegie Mellon University: No. 8
- University of Pittsburgh: No. 46
Pittsburgh bachelor's nursing program rankings
U.S. News ranked universities based on their Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs. Four Pittsburgh-area universities made the list:
- University of Pittsburgh: No. 12
- Duquesne University: No. 56
- Carlow University: No. 336
- Robert Morris University: No. 394
How Pittsburgh university rankings were determined
U.S. News looked at more than 1,700 colleges and universities across the country to create their 2027 list of best universities, scoring schools based on 17 measures of academic quality and graduate success, according to its website.
To be eligible for the ranking, schools needed to have a large baccalaureate degree focus; hold regional accreditation; offer campus-based education; enroll at least 100 undergraduates and 25 first-time, full-time students seeking bachelor's degrees over the past four years; and award degrees not fully specialized in performing arts or faith-based education. U.S. News also examined surveys submitted directly from schools, as well as U.S. government data.
Regional universities were ranked separately based on their location. These schools offer a wide range of undergraduate degrees and some master's degrees, with fewer doctoral programs with a research focus.
U.S. News also ranked schools based on their program offerings, with categories for schools with the best undergraduate programs in engineering, business, computer science, nursing and more. Schools that made these lists offer opportunities like study abroad experiences, co-ops or internships and senior capstones.
