As Anne Hathaway's fifth and final movie of the year, "Verity," hit theatres on Friday, Oct. 2, the actress vanished into "a plume of smoke."
In a video posted to her Instagram, Hathaway, 43, pregnant with her third child, disappeared after encouraging followers to watch her new film in theatres.
"So, we're heading out to the 'Verity' premiere," Hathaway said in the video while getting ready. "'Verity' comes out in theatres Friday, Oct. 2, and then on Oct. 3..."
After the actress practically evaporated into thin air, one of her team members stepped into the frame asking, "Where is she?"
The video then cuts to headlines announcing the actress's disappearance before the text "Zendaya, Tom, Rob, Florence – bring it home" appears.
"Thank you, everyone,
for your support, and for making this an incredible, unforgettable year," the video concludes.
Hathaway's plans post Oct. 2
Hathaway had promised she would "vanish in a plume of smoke" on Oct. 3, the minute "Verity" releases.
"You're not gonna see me until you have to," the actor had told Entertainment Tonight. "So, I'm definitely going to disappear. Take some time off."
On "Verity's" premiere night, she told the publication that while she hasn't thought about what she wants to do after Oct. 3, she is looking forward to "being open" and "not having a schedule."
"It's been an amazing year, but it's been a lot of logistics," Hathaway said. "So, I think to just kind of have my schedule be my kids' schedule. I get to do like really self-indulgent things like go to a yoga class, and stuff like that."
"Maybe just like self-care and nesting," she added.
What is 'Verity' about?
In "Verity," Hathaway shares the screen with Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Based on best-selling author Colleen Hoover's book of the same name, the film follows struggling Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), who is hired as a ghostwriter after the mega-popular suspense novelist Verity Crawford (Hathaway) is left paralyzed by an accident and unable to speak.
Lowen temporarily moves in with the incapacitated author and her husband, Jeremy (Hartnett), to sift through Verity’s notes and get a feel for her writing. But she quickly uncovers disturbing secrets about Verity and the mysterious death of her young daughter, Harper (Sienna Kulovitz).
Hathaway has had an action-packed 2026, starting with "Mother Mary" in April, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” in May, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" in July, “The End of Oak Street” in August and concluding with "Verity" in October.
“Maybe I’m just greedy,” Hathaway had told USA TODAY about her 2026 run during "The Odyssey's" press tour. “Lucky and greedy, that’s me.”
