The Kansas City Chiefs briefly appeared to score a go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds of their Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos, but a pre-snap false start penalty on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped it out.
Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes
, was among those who vehemently disagreed with the penalty call, as she expressed in a social media post shortly after the game."You can't tell me you call that on a game winning TD," Brittany Mahomes wrote in a post to her Instagram story. "Oh wait yeah I can cause it's us."
"That's the weakest call I have ever seen," she added. "You can't tell me otherwise."
Mahomes wasn't alone in her assessment of the play. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked during his postgame news conference
what he thought of the call.
"I didn’t see it," Reid told reporters. "That's one man's opinion. I just didn't see it. I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see [a] false start."
The false start penalty proved costly. Before the penalty, the Chiefs were left with a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with four seconds remaining in regulation of the 28-24 contest.
Instead, the 5-yard infraction backed the Chiefs up to the 6-yard line. That gave the Broncos a better chance to pressure Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked by Malcolm Roach for a 2-yard loss to end the game.
Even despite the questionable nature of the call, Moore was contrite when asked about the penalty following the game.
"I mean, I’ve just got to be better. I still haven’t gotten a chance to look at it, but, regardless, I’ve just got to be better," Moore said, per ESPN's Nate Taylor. "With [the game] being so tight, the situation that it was, it just hurts even more."
The Chiefs fell to 5-2 after dropping their second consecutive game and are now trailing the Broncos (6-2) by half a game in the AFC West race.
Kansas City will look to get back on track in Week 9 when Reid, Mahomes and Co. host the New York Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.
