BMW is recalling more than 27,000 vehicles in the United States because of a defect involving the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential that could increase the risk of a crash.
According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential may, over time, be subject to excessive wear. In rare cases, the issue could lead to a loss of power to the rear wheels.
The agency said the defect could increase the risk of a crash. In rare instances, if the vehicle is not secured by the parking brake, it could also result in a vehicle rolling away.
Here's what to know about the recall, including the affected BMW models and what owners should
do next.
Which BMW models are included in the recall?
According to the NHTSA, 27,720 vehicles are potentially affected. The recalled models include:
- 2022-2026 BMW 840i, 840i xDrive (7,372 vehicles)
- 2024-2026 BMW 750e xDrive (2,198 vehicles)
- 2021-2023 BMW 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive (18,150 vehicles)
What should BMW owners do?
Owners are advised to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealership for a free inspection.
Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential. If necessary, technicians will apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential at no cost.
Dealer notifications began Aug. 12. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning Oct. 2.
Owners who previously paid to have the issue repaired before receiving the recall notice may be eligible for reimbursement under BMW's reimbursement plan. Consumers with questions can contact their local authorized BMW dealer or BMW customer service.
