A wrestler in Mexico has been arrested after a referee died after he performed a move on him.
Hijo de Fishman was arrested and charged with manslaughter on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in Hidalgo, Mexico in connection with the death of wrestling veteran Gerardo German Pineda, also known as "El Búho."
The incident occured during a El Patron Espectaculos Lucha Libre match on Tuesday, Oct. 6 in the city of Mineral de la Reforma in Hidalgo. Hijo de Fishman faced Mascara Sagrada and as part of the events, Hijo de Fishman attacked the 75-year-old Pineda. Later on, local reports state Hijo de Fishman performed a double underhook piledriver on Pineda, a move than involves the attacker bending the other person forward and placing their head in between their legs
while hooking their arms before dropping in a sitting position meant to hit the opponent's head onto the mat.
After Hijo de Fishman performed the move, Pineda reportedly did not move and medical staff rushed to the ring, and he was later pronounced dead.
That led to Hijo de Fishman with being charged with manslaughter as local authorities investigate the incident.
El Patron Espectaculos Lucha Libre released a statement confirming Pineda "unfortunately lost his life." The company said it is providing legal assistance to Hijo de Fishman and are in contact with Pineda's family and legal representatives to "handle the case in the best way and guarantee respect for all parties involved."
"The legal process is still ongoing, therefore, out of respect for the authorities and due process, this company will refrain from issuing additional information that could interfere with or prejudice the facts," the statement read. "We ask the fans, media and members of the guild to act with prudence, discretion and respect, and avoid the spread of rumors or unconfirmed information, so as not to hinder the investigations and out of respect for all parties involved and their families.
"We deeply regret the loss of a life and express our solidarity with his family, friends and colleagues in the wrestling business."
Hijo de Fishman is an independent wrestler in Mexico that wrestlers for several promotions and is the son of Lucha Libre legend Fishman.
