Hurricane Lala doused Hawaii with torrential rains and lashed the islands with winds on Sunday as forecasters warned of flooding, mudslides and dangerous surf conditions.
The storm didn't make landfall overnight, but it battered the Big Island of Hawaii's southern coast on Saturday as a Category 1 hurricane. At the time, it was 85 miles of the coast of the Big Island, Hawaii, but it was already bringing heavy rains and strong wind gusts to the island.
Forecasters previously warned that more than 2 feet of rain could fall on some parts of the Big Island, with more widespread totals of 10 to 20 inches. Eastern Maui could see 8 to 12 inches, and other islands in Hawaii could get 4 to 6 inches of rain from Lala. The rain will produce "life-threatening"
flooding, forecasters warned.
Lala is expected to head west on Sunday with an increase in speed, while the core of the storm passes south of the rest of the Hawaiian Islands.
