POGOH’s regional bike-share expansion is moving forward with a $1.5 million state transportation award intended to bring the system to communities beyond Pittsburgh’s borders.
Allegheny County Economic Development received the funding through PennDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside program. The agency will partner with Bike Share Pittsburgh, the nonprofit that owns and operates POGOH, on Phase 4 of the network’s growth. The investment supports up to 17 new stations in communities identified as having the greatest need for additional transportation options.
County officials and Bike Share Pittsburgh are working with municipalities and residents to determine station locations. Communities being considered include Millvale, Wilkinsburg, Edgewood,
Homestead and West Homestead, with other eastern Allegheny County locations also possible. The expansion would be POGOH’s first outside Pittsburgh city limits.
The project builds on a separate Phase 3 plan for more than 40 additional POGOH stations within Pittsburgh. That phase is expected to restore service at some former Healthy Ride locations, add density in current service areas and connect new neighborhoods, including Squirrel Hill and Highland Park.
PennDOT’s TASA program funds active-transportation projects, including pedestrian and bicycle facilities and initiatives designed to improve access for people who do not drive. The program covers construction costs, while project sponsors pay for design, permitting and other pre-construction work.
