Fantasy football managers are starting to feel the pain of injuries even more acutely as the first NFL teams go on bye in Week 5.
Rosters have already been depleted, especially at wide receiver, over the past couple weeks. And now with the Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs taking their byes, there could be some serious trouble brewing.
Here are some of the most prominent players dealing with nagging ailments or coming back from major issues that will impact fantasy managers most in Week 5. As always, keep an eye on the latest developments leading up to kickoff with our player notes page.
QB Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
It's not looking good. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Jackson has "just an outside
chance" of being able to play against the Falcons. Jackson is dealing with an ankle sprain that not only could keep him from suiting up on Sunday night, but could require several weeks to heal. Backup Tyler Huntley would take over in Jackson's absence.
QB Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
Coach Dan Quinn reiterated on Monday that the team plans to give Daniels (elbow) a full week of practice and have him start on Sunday against the Giants. He'll need to get accustomed to a new brace on his dislocated left elbow, but it shouldn't affect his throwing.
RB Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
While the hamstring strain that forced Barkley out of last week's game doesn't appear to be a major one, it could still keep him out of action in the short term. He's not expected to practice on Wednesday, and the Eagles say he's week-to-week, which doesn't bode well for him taking the field on Sunday in London. Backup Tank Bigsby (abdomen) went on injured reserve this week, leaving Will Shipley andDameon Pierce, who was reportedly just activated from the practice squad, as the only healthy running backs on the active roster.
WR Ja'Marr Chase, Cincinnati Bengals
Chase must clear the NFL's concussion protocol after being ruled out last Sunday when he was tackled by his facemask. He's unlikely to get that clearance in time to practice early in the week, but monitor his participation as we get closer to kickoff.
WEEK 5 RANKINGS: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DST
WR Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
Jefferson suffered an ankle injury in Week 3 and didn't play last week. However, he's hoping to be able to suit up this Sunday against the Saints. The sprain was described as a minor one, so a return to practice this week would be a pretty good indicator he'll be good to go.
WR DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles
It may be another week before Smith is ready to test out his injured hamstring. He played through it in Week 3, but then was unable to practice at all last week. The Eagles travel to London on Sunday to face the Jaguars; it's unlikely Smith will be on that plane. Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon and Darius Cooper will look to revive a passing attack that produced just 93 yards against the Bears.
WR Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders
Although he practiced on a limited basis last Friday, McLaurin (hamstring) did not play in Sunday's loss to the Colts. Getting him and QB Jayden Daniels back to face the Giants would be a major boost to the Commanders offense.
WR Ladd McConkey, Los Angeles Chargers
McConkey (foot) tried to play last week in Seattle, but lasted only 24 snaps before leaving the game without a reception. Coach Jim Harbaugh has termed him "week-to-week." This would be a good time for fellow wideout Quentin Johnston to step up, but he has just seven catches on 19 targets for the season.
