The wait is over. The 2026 NFL regular season is about to kick off with a Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on Wednesday, Sept. 9, followed by the NFL's first-ever
game in Australia featuring NFC West rivals the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
The first picks and predictions are already rolling in after the schedule makers gave fans a bevy of intriguing matchups to sort through during the opening batch of games.
Here's a look at the early expert picks, predictions and odds for every game during Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season:

The Patriots' two biggest problems heading into Week 1 are both related to the pass rush: on defense, they have no proven pass rush, and on the other side of the ball, I don't think their offensive line can stop Seattle's pass rush."

"The Patriots had a historically easy schedule last season and went 7-3 in one-score games. They had things break their way in the postseason, playing nothing but injured teams throughout the AFC side of the bracket. The Rams' offense also faces a 49ers' defense in transition with Matthew Stafford having all the principal players back in a balanced, explosive attack."

"The Rams are the favorite to win the Super Bowl and could have an elite defense with Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett. The defense will make a big play or two to seal a big NFC West win in Week 1 against San Francisco."

Buffalo averaged a 74.7 offensive pass-blocking grade, which fell to 57.8 against the Texans."

"The Houston Texans have no business being home underdogs against Buffalo in Week 1. Houston had the league's top-ranked defense a year ago and looks to be even better this season, at least on paper. Should the Texans trust C.J. Stroud to go play-for-play against Allen? Of course not, but if their defense is close to midseason form, a little smart game management should be enough to get the win."

Chicago Bears vs. Carolina Panthers

Those two factors alone are going to be extremely difficult to replicate, so they'll have to be a much better team to have another strong record."

"On paper, this is a matchup between two NFC division winners from last season who both lost to the Rams in close playoff games. In reality, it's one ascending 11-6 Super Bowl contender (Chicago) being hosted by an 8-9 team (Carolina). Ben Johnson's offense will jump into overdrive out of the gate and around Bryce Young, the Panthers simply don't have the firepower to keep up with Caleb Williams."

Meanwhile, the Bengals have a history of starting slow in the Zac Taylor era."

The Lions' defense is a work in progress again around Aidan Hutchinson and Jared Goff is adjusting to a new offense. Detroit finds enough pop with Jahmyr Gibbs to win a dome team battle."

The offseason darlings, the Jacksonville Jaguars, have a high-flying, well-paced offense that scores in bunches. Though the Browns’ defense would like to have a word. Myles Garrett is gone, but that doesn’t mean the world is falling. Jared Verse replaces him and is very capable, while the Browns still have Denzel Ward, Carson Schwesinger, and Mason Graham. This defensive line will give teams fits."

This might be the Dolphins' best chance at a win all season, but they're still going to lose by at least a touchdown."

"Distractions in sports tend to be overrated, but the Kansas City Chiefs have A LOT going on headed into the new season. It's fair to question what version of Patrick Mahomes we'll get in Week 1 after tearing his ACL and LCL late last season. The fact that he's coming off a bad season (by his standards) and will be playing one of the league's top defenses adds to those concerns. Denver is coming off a season where they went 5-1 against the spread as an underdog. Expect them to be ready to compete and keep this game within the number against a Chiefs team that could need time to find its footing."
