Jaclyn Smith is revealing one of the more eyebrow-raising secrets from the “Charlie’s Angels” set – the name of the fellow Angel who once propositioned her for a threesome while on a plane to Hawaii.
In her new memoir, “I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie,” out now, Smith, 80, writes that late “Charlie’s Angels” co-star Tanya Roberts asked Smith to join her and then husband, Barry Roberts, for a threesome while the cast was flying to Hawaii to shoot episodes during the show’s fifth and final season.
Smith writes that Roberts, who died in 2021, and her husband had an open marriage and that Roberts was candid about propositioning others to “swing” with the couple. Smith declined the invitation.
“I found her honesty about her sexuality to be brave and
self-aware," Smith writes. "The world is made up of all kinds of people with all kinds of passions, and hooray for that. My own perspective on marriage was traditional, based on the values I grew up with. Her choice seemed complicated to me, with great potential for hurt feelings."
While Smith offered minimal details about the conversation aftermath, the kicker is pure Bosley. David Doyle, who played the Angels’ handler, John Bosley, witnessed the whole proposition from the seat behind the flying Angels. When Roberts went to the bathroom, Doyle asked Smith if she needed "some salt."
“I was confused," Smith writes. “He said, ‘Take it with a grain of salt,’ and gestured toward the bathroom.”
Model-turned-actress Roberts joined the fifth and final season of “Charlie’s Angels” as Julie Rogers, replacing Shelley Hack and starring alongside Smith and Cheryl Ladd. Roberts later played geologist Stacey Sutton opposite Roger Moore in the 1985 James Bond film “A View to a Kill” and had a major career resurgence as Midge Pinciotti, Donna’s ditzy mother, on “That ’70s Show.”
Smith writes about all the Angels in her memoir, especially Season 1 costar Farrah Fawcett, who died of cancer in 2009 at 62. In an interview withUSA TODAY, Smith recalled her final meeting with Fawcettand the emotional letter her longtime friend wrote near the end of her life.
