The midsize, three-row family SUV segment is popular among drivers with large families. Several automotive brands offer these SUVs in affordable models starting below the average new vehicle price of nearly $50,000.
I test cars for a living and have driven some of the year's most impactful family SUVs. Here's a ranking, in descending order, of the best midsize three-row family SUVs based on research and my testing experience.
3. Honda Pilot
Honda's midsize three-row SUV has the most third-row legroom of the three models listed — 32.5 inches. It's a solid pick for drivers who need an adult-sized third row and value driving ride. Honda has held onto the Pilot's V6 engine instead of opting for a turbocharged four-cylinder like many rivals. This makes it more powerful
than competitors like the Telluride.

Starting MSRP: $42,395
Horsepower/torque: 285 horsepower/262 pound-feet of torque
MPG: 19 city, 27 highway, 22 combined
Who I recommend it to: Parents of teenagers who regularly carpool should consider the 2026 Honda Pilot over rivals because of its significant third-row legroom. Additionally, drivers who value V6 engines over more complex powertrain systems will appreciate the Pilot, which is also a practical choice in terms of interior space for all passengers.
2. Nissan Pathfinder
The Nissan Pathfinder surprised me during testing. It was much more practical and refined than anticipated. The Pathfinder is the best pick on our list for heavy-duty towing and long-distance driving comfort. NASA's public scientific research inspired the midsize SUV's front seat design, according to Nissan.

Starting MSRP: $39,990
Horsepower/torque: 284 horsepower/259 pound-feet of torque
MPG: 21 city, 27 highway, 23 combined
Who I recommend it to: If you regularly take long road trips, I recommend the Nissan Pathfinder because of its cozy interior and premium material options. I drove the new Pathfinder from central New Jersey to downtown Philadelphia in heavy traffic. The driver's seat was extremely comfortable, and the charging ports and controls were easily accessible. My passengers also enjoyed the Pathfinder's legroom and spaciousness. One even asked about pricing during the ride because they were so pleased with the passenger experience.
1. Kia Telluride
South Korean brand Kia completely redesigned the Telluride for its second generation. This model is larger and has a bolder exterior design. It also includes modern tech like a massive standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Of the three ranked vehicles, the Telluride has the most trunk space behind the third row of the trio (22.3 cubic feet).

Starting MSRP: $39,190
Horsepower/torque: 274 horsepower/311 pound-feet of torque
MPG: 20 city, 26 highway, 22 combined
Who I recommend it to: Kia's Telluride is the top pick in its segment for value-conscious car buyers. If you need a spacious and practical midsize family SUV, the Telluride checks all the boxes. It is roomy and comes loaded with great standard tech for the money. Upper trims also offer better features for drivers willing to spend a bit more on upgrades. I enjoyed the Telluride's cabin quality and smooth ride. It was also powerful enough to make driving enjoyable and handled well for its size.
You don't have to break the bank to get an impressive new midsize three-row family SUV in 2026. These affordable options sit at the top of their segment for value.
