Passengers on a United Airlines flight didn't reach their final destination until nearly nine hours after its scheduled arrival time because of a "potential security concern," the airline said.
United flight 1681 departed Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas at around 10:30 p.m. local time on Oct. 24 for its approximately five-hour journey to Newark Liberty International Airport. About an hour after takeoff, the Boeing 737 returned to the Las Vegas airport, the airline told USA TODAY in a statement.
The airline did not specify the security concern.
KSNV, citing airport officials, reported that the plane returned shortly after takeoff following "a report of a passenger disturbance."
The airport confirmed the incident to USA TODAY, saying the flight returned because of security concerns, and deferred to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for additional details. The police department did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.
No injuries were reported among the 150 passengers and six crew members.
Because of a crew timeout, which occurs when pilots or flight attendants reach their maximum legal working hours, the flight was delayed overnight. It departed on Oct. 25 around 7 a.m. and landed around 3 p.m. ET, more than eight hours after its scheduled arrival, according to FlightAware.
