Trevor Lawrence appeared to have a 16-yard rushing touchdown available to him in the fourth quarter of the Jacksonville Jaguars' Week 4 win over the New England Patriots.
Lawrence raised eyebrows by instead deciding to take a knee just a yard away from the end zone following his scamper. That allowed his teammate, running back Bhayshul Tuten, to punch in a 1-yard score on the next play.
Lawrence made it clear after the contest that his decision was entirely about trying to bleed time off the clock in a game the Jaguars were already winning, 28-6.
"In hindsight, I probably should have just scored, because we scored the very next play," Lawrence explained
to CBS Sports' Aditi Kinkhabwala in a postgame interview. "I'm trying to run the clock out a bit."
Even so, the 26-year-old took the opportunity presented to him to crack a fantasy football-themed joke.
"I'm trying to help support the Bhayshul Tuten fantasy people out there," Lawrence said, with a smile.
Tuten enjoyed a quality outing against the Patriots, posting 90 yards on 17 touches. However, fantasy football managers were dealt a blow in the third quarter when backup running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. vultured a touchdown from the Jaguars' backfield leader.
While those rostering Tuten may be grateful for Lawrence's late-game gesture, fantasy managers with the Jaguars quarterback on their roster may find themselves frustrated by his selflessness.
Even so, the fifth-year pro passed for 182 yards and three touchdowns with one interception while adding 25 rushing yards on four carries.
