With Labor Day behind us, all eyes are on fall, which means apple picking season in the Washington DC area.
Last April's deep freeze in the region will impact the season's apple supply, but that doesn't mean you can't find fresh apples in the DMV and enjoy one of the season's most popular activities.
Here's a look at some of the area's apple farms and if you're able to pick fruit from them this fall.
Where are the apple farms in the Washington DC area?
Butler's Orchard (22222 Davis Mill Rd., Germantown, MD 20876): Apple picking is already closed for the season at Butler's, but you can still pick other fruits and vegetables. In late August, Tyler Butler said the farm would still have apples, donuts and cider available for purchase even after all the apples were picked from trees.
Stribling Orchard
(11587 Poverty Hollow Lane, Markham, VA 22643): The freeze resulted in the loss of its peach and apple crops, but the orchard remains open on weekends and is selling pre-picked Virginia apples and other fall classics.
Mackintosh Fruit Farm (1608 Russell Rd., Berryville, VA 22611): Like other farms, Mackintosh said it would have a limited supply of some apples to pick this year, including its Crimson Crisps and Honey Crisps.
Catoctin Mountain Orchard (15036 N Franklinville Rd., Thurmont, MD 21788): Catoctin had "catastrophic damage" to its apple crop, but said one location was safe because its high elevation did not get hit by the frost.
Great Country Farms (34345 Snickersville Turnpike, Bluemont, VA 20135): Guests at Great Country Farms can pick Golden Delicious, September Fuji, Honey Gold, Crispin and Gala apples through Sept. 18.
Gaver Farm (5501 Detrick Rd., Mt. Airy, MD 21771): 90% of the apple crop was lost at Gaver Farm, and it said apple picking would not be available this season. Apples will still be available for purchase in its market.
Hartland Orchard (3064 Hartland Lane, Markham, VA 22643): Peaches are sold out, but Hartland has Gala, Honey Crips, Golden Delicious to pick at its farm despite the hard spring freeze.
Marker-Miller Orchards (3035 Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, VA 22602): The majority of the apple crop was lost at Marker-Miller, but it will still have multiple varieties in its market to purchase throughout weekends in September.
