The penultimate day of August has arrived, and it will be a dark one for the dreams of many NFL players.
The NFL's annual 53-man roster deadline will come to pass at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 30. All 32 of the league's clubs operate with a standard offseason roster size of 90, so a minimum of 1,184 potential roster spots will evaporate overnight.
Of course, the good news is that many of the players released will find themselves on practice squads just days after the roster deadline passes. That will give them a chance to continue developing and eventually fight for playing time down the road as injuries occur.
There's also the possibility that some released players will land on the active rosters of other NFL teams. All players with four or fewer
accrued seasons are subject to waivers, so they could be claimed and placed on a different club's 53-man roster before the 2026 NFL season.
Even so, numerous NFL players will be anxiously awaiting their fates ahead of the 2026 roster deadline. None will be more notable than Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a 2024 first-round pick who endured a rough preseason, and 33-year-old New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is attempting an NFL comeback after sitting out the 2025 season.
Fans will be eagerly keeping an eye on which players make their favorite teams and will also be keen to monitor 11th-hour trades. A few have happened in advance of the deadline – like the Jacksonville Jaguars trading for Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Dallas Cowboys acquiring veteran offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers – so that will add another layer of intrigue to Sunday's action.
