When people think of Texas high school football, they either think of high-scoring shootouts or low-scoring defensive slugfests.
Fans in Richmond (TX) were treated to the latter on Thursday night, Sept.
3, as the host Randle Lions squared off with the visiting Westfield Mustangs. What followed was a final line that almost seems impossible.
Led by a 149-yard rushing night from Texas five-star running back commit Landen Williams-Callis, Randle held off Westfield for a 3-0 win. It's the first score to finish with that low of a score in the state since Granbury beat Waco 3-0 during the first week of the 2024 season.
Tied at zero following the first half, Westfield opened the second half with a massive return that put them deep into Randle territory. However, a plethora of penalties quickly pushed the Mustangs back and they were forced to punt.
The Lions then embarked on a long drive of their own with Williams-Callis leading the way. He carried them deep into Westfield territory before they were forced to settle for a field goal. Yasin Mohammadi connected on the 28-yard field goal which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
Through the first two games of his senior season, Williams-Callis has rushed for 379 yards on 66 carries. He entered the season with 7,554 career rushing yards, meaning he needs to finish the season with 2,446 yards to become just the fifth player in state history to hit the 10,000-yard mark.
Randle's defense has also been one of its biggest strengths so far in 2016. Last season, the Lions gave up an average of 16.1 points per game. Between their season-opening 20 -14 win over South Lake Carroll and Thursday night's result, they're so far only giving up an average of seven points per game.
