New Order musician Gillian Gilbert has been battling cancer.
The English rock band's longtime keyboardist "gently" clarified "a misunderstanding" after her husband and bandmate Stephen Morris told Rolling Stone that he has "a bit of a health problem," which complicates his attendance at the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
induction in November. Fans interpreted the comments to be about the New Order drummer's health."We have both been incredibly touched by all the kind words and well wishes," Gilbert wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Sept. 15. "I would like to gently clarify a misunderstanding from the interview, in the course of which comments were misinterpreted leading people to believe that Stephen is seriously ill. Thankfully, he is well.
It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer."
Gilbert did not say what kind of cancer she is battling, or for how long.
"We are enormously grateful for everyone's kindness and support and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment," she continued.
Morris previously told Rolling Stone that he and Gilbert, who have been married since 1994, were still unsure about whether they would attend the band's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in the fall.
"I've got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time," Morris told Rolling Stone in an interview published Sept. 8. "We did try [before]. We went to an exhibition, the [late Joy Division singer] Ian Curtis lyrics exhibition in New York a few months ago and thought, 'We'll see how this goes.'"
He continued, "That was only two days, and it just ended in disaster. So maybe not, maybe, but I can't really say things will get better, because they won't."
The punk-EDM band, best known for the 1980s tracks "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle," will be inducted as both Joy Division and New Order, given their name change after Curtis' death.
