Ryan Garcia will step into the ring against Conor Benn at a crossroads.
He’s a world-class boxing showman, a mix of wit, bravado, and bombast that generates buzz. But his welterweight title fight against Benn will help determine if his skills inside the ring can match his skills outside the ring.
Garcia is less than 17 months removed from a defeat against Rolly Romero by unanimous decision – one of the most disappointing fights of Garcia’s career.
The WBC then helped rescue him. The sanctioning body gave Garcia a title shot against Mario Barrios, and Garcia made the most of it by winning his first world title by unanimous decision.
Benn is a step up in class.
During the promotional activities before this bout, Garcia stayed one step ahead of Benn.
Well, maybe two or three steps. But whether Garcia is a bona fide champion inside the ring will hinge in part on his performance Saturday night in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports will have live updates, highlights and analysis for the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn card here.
