A new Netflix docuseries will revisit the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teenager whose 2005 disappearance in Aruba sparked international attention and a yearslong search for answers.
“Taken: Natalee Holloway,” a three-part documentary, premieres on Wednesday, Nov. 4 on Netflix. The series will feature Holloway’s mother, Beth Holloway, recounting the case and her search for the truth over the past two decades, according to Netflix.
Directed by Dani Sloane (“The Menendez Brothers,” “Girl in the Picture”) and Matthew Galkin (“Murder in Big Horn”), the series promises never-before-seen footage, access to investigators and previously unreported details about the case.
The documentary also revisits a significant turn in the case in 2023,
when Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in Holloway’s disappearance, confessed to killing her as part of a federal plea deal.
Here is what to know about the case.
What happened to Natalee Holloway?
Holloway was 18 and living in Mountain Brook, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, when she traveled to Aruba with high school classmates to celebrate their graduation in May 2005.
She was scheduled to fly home May 30 but never appeared for her return flight. She was last seen leaving a nightclub in Oranjestad with van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, according to the FBI.
Authorities arrested van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers during the investigation, but all three were later released without being charged in connection with Holloway’s disappearance. An Alabama judge declared her legally dead in 2012. Her remains have never been found.

What did Joran van der Sloot confess?
Van der Sloot told investigators he killed Holloway on a beach after she rejected his sexual advances, then disposed of her body in the ocean. He described striking her with a cinder block, according to Reuters.
He pleaded guilty to federal extortion and wire fraud charges on Oct. 18, 2023, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors said he sought $250,000 from Holloway’s family in exchange for information about her remains. He received $25,100 but provided false information about their location.
The judge also ordered van der Sloot to pay Beth Holloway $25,100 in restitution. His U.S. sentence runs concurrently with a 28-year sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student.
Where is Joran van der Sloot now?
Van der Sloot was not convicted of Holloway’s murder in the United States.
As of August 2026, he was reported to be incarcerated at Challapalca prison in Peru. He had requested a transfer, alleging threats from fellow inmates, according to NL Times. It was not immediately clear whether his transfer request had been approved as of October 2026.
