Duncan Sheik, the Grammy- and Tony-winning musician best known for his 1996 hit "Barely Breathing," is receiving medical treatment and in critical condition.
The update was announced Wednesday, Sept. 17, in a statement posted to the 56-year-old singer-songwriter’s Instagram account.
No diagnosis or other information about what led to Sheik's condition was disclosed.
"Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time," the statement continued. "We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support."
USA TODAY has reached out to Sheik’s label, Nonesuch Records, and his representatives for comment.
Who is Duncan Sheik?
Sheik rose to prominence with "Barely Breathing," the lead single from his 1996 self-titled debut album. The track spent 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Sheik a Grammy nomination for best male pop vocal performance.
The New Jersey-born musician went on to release nine studio albums while also building a successful career composing for theater and film.
Sheik is perhaps best known in the theater world for composing the music for "Spring Awakening," the musical based on German playwright Frank Wedekind's play of the same name.
The original Broadway production earned eight Tony Awards in 2007, including best musical. Sheik won for best orchestrations and shared the award for best original score with lyricist Steven Sater. The show's cast recording later earned a Grammy Award for best musical show album.
A new off-Broadway revival of "Spring Awakening" is scheduled to begin previews on Nov. 27 at Studio Seaview in New York before officially opening Dec. 17. The limited production is expected to run through Feb. 14.
Sheik also wrote the music and lyrics for "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen," a new musical inspired by Moyoco Anno's manga series, according to Theater Mania. The production was announced for an off-Broadway premiere in the fall.
