Gloria Steinem, a civil rights activist whose work amplified women's rights and the push for equality, has died at age 92.
The news was announced through her Instagram page on Sept. 3, which says that she "passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her."
Steinem was one of the founders of New York and Ms. magazines and author of numerous books, including "My Life on the Road" and "The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off!"
In addition to cofounding the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, and the Free to Be Foundation, she was also part of spearheading the Women's Media Center, a nonprofit focused on boosting stories of women and underrepresented stories in the media.
Women's Media Center President and CEO Julie Burton highlighted Steinem's impact in a statement following her death.
"She used her voice and writing to raise visibility for women and the issues of our time. We came to take it for granted that she would always be where she was most needed — at the podium, on TV, on the plane, on the phone, or at the computer — to make the ideal of social justice a reality," Burton said, according to the press release.
"Her phrases have become mottoes of our time. She is well known for having been a founder of Ms. magazine and for her writing and media work."

In a tribute to Steinem, fellow Women's in Media cofounder Jane Fonda shared some of her favorite quotes from the thought leader that she said has "been most helpful," per the press release.
