Melania Trump is about to receive a special delivery.
Days before IndyCar’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix spins through Washington, DC, on Aug. 23, the drivers will stop by the White House Rose Garden to gift the first lady a specially designed commemorative helmet at an event marking a new Fostering the Future initiative partnership.
On Thursday, Aug. 20, the first lady will announce IndyCar and Fox Sports as sponsors for scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University through Fostering the Future. The initiative is now part of 26 universities around the country such as University of Texas, University of North Carolina, Dominican University in New York and Pepperdine University.

The helmet, designed by IndyCar's drivers, will be presented to
the first lady in recognition of her Be Best initiative and is inscribed with “Melania Be Best Fostering the Future” has a red-white-and-blue theme.
In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fostering the Future Act (H.R. 7432), a bipartisan piece of legislation to modernize federal foster care programs based on Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative to improve education, housing and career outcomes for people transitioning from foster care. Now, the first lady is working with lawmakers to get it passed in the Senate.
“The first lady is personally involved in calling Sen. Thune (Senate Majority Leader John Thune) and trying to get him to force a vote because it was passed unanimously in the House,” Marc Beckman, a senior adviser to the first lady said. “She is working behind the scenes.”
Melania Trump is 'not about optics'
The first lady has drawn scrutiny for what some critics have said is a light schedule in her husband’s second term as president, skipping high profile events like Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral and the Patriot Games, a national teenage athletic competition in Ohio. She also chose to skip the rescheduled White House Correspondent’ Dinnerin July.
Multiple news outlets have tracked the first lady’s public engagement and found that she only was seen 38 days through the first seven months of 2026 - about half as many times as she appeared during Trump’s first term during the same time-period. She was last seen publicly at the 2026 World Cup final on July 19.
But that doesn’t mean she has been sitting on her hands, Beckman told USA TODAY.
“This First Lady is about results. She is not about optics,” Beckman said.
In May 2025, she co-signed the Take It Down Act, a law that aims to protect victims of deepfakes and revenge pornography, during an event at the Rose Garden.
Both legislative efforts are an extension of her "Be Best" initiative, which she has championed since her husband’s first term.
Talking about criticisms of the first lady being out of the public eye, Beckman pointed to Trump’s ongoing humanitarian initiative, which on Aug. 17 facilitated the return and reunification of the 34th child separated by the Russia's war in Ukraine.
The effort began when she wrote a personal “peace letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2025, which was hand-delivered by the president to Putin during their summit in Anchorage, Alaska.
“The amount of time that she's working with her team and the office and the foreign nations goes overlooked,” Beckman said, adding this week itself is the perfect example where she’s helping both international and American children.
