The ice got too thin for the "Thiccer Kicker."
The Los Angeles Rams are parting ways with Harrison Mevis, according to NFL Media, not even 24 hours after the second-year placekicker missed two field goals in Monday night's 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. Mevis' 48-yard attempt in OT, which would have won the game, was blocked by Buffalo's Greg Rousseau.
"I felt like I hit it good," Mevis said. "That's all I can tell you. I mean, I hit it good, gave it a chance. I'll have to look."
After the miss, which followed a fumble by Buffalo running back James Cook on the opening possession of overtime, the Bills advanced the ball 35 yards on five plays before Tyler Bass connected on the game-winning shot from 45 yards.
Rams coach Sean McVay was
clearly agitated following a loss for a team that was, and probably still is, widely expected to reach Super Bowl 61 in its own stadium.
"In the kicking game, especially with our PAT/field goal, not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight," McVay said after the loss dropped his team to 2-3, admitting he'd take a hard look at the operation.
“Yeah, I'm going to evaluate everything.”

Mevis was the Rams' fifth kicker in the five seasons since they won Super Bowl 56 to cap the 2021 campaign. His nickname comes from his 5-foot-11, 243-pound build. But he hasn't shown an especially heavy leg or been the kind of weapon peers like Dallas' Brandon Aubrey or Jacksonville's Cam Little have become.
Mevis certainly stabilized the position after taking over for Joshua Karty in 2025, converting 12 of 13 field-goal tries and all 39 of his extra-point attempts − important given McVay's apparent reluctance to go for two (the Rams haven't had a successful two-point try since 2023).
However Mevis missed four of his nine FG attempts this year and has never been a long-range weapon − 52 yards his career best and also the lone field goal he's hit beyond 50 yards, though he's only attempted two and missed a 50-yarder Monday.
The Rams have also had three field-goal tries blocked since the start of last season. They're plucking Blake Grupe from the Jets' practice squad to replace Mevis. Grupe split time between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts between the 2023 and '25 seasons.
McVay also lamented not getting Mevis closer on his pivotal attempt Monday night.
"I'm sick that we came up short, and I'll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was," he said. "And that's on me.
"It's been a while since I've been this pissed after a game."
