The average new vehicle price is nearly $50,000 in 2026. Many drivers are turning to sedans to escape the high costs of popular compact and midsize SUV models.
Luckily for car buyers, there are plenty of new vehicle models that start under $30,000 and still provide great value for the money. I've tested some of these models for USA TODAY Cars and would personally purchase at least three of them if I was in the market for a new vehicle.
Here are the best affordable new cars I've tested in 2026, ranked, along with the one I'd personally buy over all its competitors.
3. The 2026 Buick Envista is refined and doesn't break the bank
Buick's Envista is a subcompact SUV that's luxury-adjacent. It has a classy interior despite its low sticker price.
The 2026 Envista starts at $24,700. It's significantly more affordable
than the average new vehicle and it comes with great standard features like an 11.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and cloth with leatherette seating.
Why I would buy it: I would buy the new Envista because it has a low starting price, attractive exterior styling, and feels like a luxury model.
2. The 2026 Toyota Camry is a cheap midsize hybrid car
Toyota's Camry midsize car is a standard hybrid that gets stellar gas mileage. It's cheap, spacious, and comes loaded with great standard tech.
The new Camry starts at $29,600. It achieves an incredible 51 miles per gallon combined.
Why I would buy it: I would buy the Camry because it starts under $30K and has exceptional fuel economy for its segment. It's able to travel for around 686 miles on a single tank of gas thanks to its hybrid powertrain.
1. Kia's K4 sets the standard for budget-friendly cars in 2026
The 2026 Kia K4 sedan is a value-oriented South Korean model that's cheap and fun to drive. I tested the GT-Line Turbo Hatchback final configuration which comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine (190 horsepower).
The 2026 Kia K4 Sedan starts at just $22,290, making it one of the most affordable small cars of the year. It comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and auto emergency braking technology.
Why I would buy it: I would buy the Kia K4 because its sportiest iteration, the GT-Line Turbo, starts at just $28,390. It's the cost-effective new car model I would pick over rivals because it comes in five trims, making it easily customizable for buyers. It also has a spacious second row (38.0 inches of rear legroom) and plenty of cargo space (14.6 cubic feet).
Some of the most important things I look for when test driving new cars are infotainment size and usability, spaciousness, and driving verve. The Kia K4 sedan checks all those boxes, especially in the GT-Line Turbo trim.
