The match was waiting for a turning point.
In a contest charged with emotion as Manchester City played for the first time since the club was found guilty of more than 100 violations of Premier League financial rules, neither City nor hosts Liverpool could get much going.
Then, Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second yellow card in the 62nd minute, and City saw its chance.
Erling Haaland swung his left foot to put a bouncing ball into the back of the net in the 65th minute, cleaning up a bit of a scramble to open the scoring.

Those fans were celebrating again just three minutes later when Jeremy Doku, who entered in the 56th minute for his longest day of work since an August calf injury, scored a spectacular goal.
The Belgian winger slowly dribbled into the box before shifting the ball onto his right foot and bending his shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

City would make it three in the 78th minute as Rayan Cherki scored after an excellent team move, and that would be the story of the game as City stayed atop the Premier League and kept its perfect record in tact.
