Publix plans to open several new stores in October, growing its presence in its home state of Florida and in the Southeast.
The Lakeland, Florida-headquartered grocer plans to open seven stores in October: three in Kentucky, two in North Carolina and one each in Alabama and Florida. The new locations will add to four openings that occurred in August and September.
Publix had 1,440 supermarkets in the Southeast (it also has locations in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia) as of June 27, 2026, according to the privately owned company's second-quarter financial results. That's up from 1,411 locations a year ago.
Publix reported $31.9 billion in sales for the six months ending June 27, 2026, up 1.5% from a year ago.

In addition to opening 16 stores during the six-month period, Publix remodeled 56 locations and replaced and closed some stores that were "not meeting performance expectations," the company said in the news release summarizing its financial performance.
Of the 16 new supermarkets, one replaced a location closed earlier this year and three others that closed in a previous period, the company said.
USA TODAY contacted Publix on Oct. 9 for comment, but did not receive a response.
