Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation to President Trump on Monday, the White House said, departing the Pentagon after repeated tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Driscoll's resignation, which comes 18 months after he assumed the post, leaves the Army without a Senate-confirmed leader. Gen. Christopher LaNeve has served as the Army's acting chief of staff after Hegseth suddenly fired his predecessor, Gen. Randy George, in April.
Driscoll is the latest military leader to leave office amid a string of departures. Gen. Christopher Donahue, the Army's commander in Europe and Africa, left his post in June.
“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the
Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement.
“The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War,” Kelly added.
The Pentagon referred questions to the Army. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Driscoll's resignation.
Driscoll is a former adviser to Vice President JD Vance. The two men became close after they were classmates at Yale Law School.
