Michigan football has issued an update regarding the Wolverines' starting quarterback. With any luck, coach Kyle Whittingham will have no further updates the rest of the season.
Whittingham on Monday, Nov. 2, announced that Tommy Carr, the backup to Bryce Underwood to start the season, will be the Wolverines' starter vs. rival Michigan State and onward.
"Tommy will start this week and for the foreseeable future, unless something changes," Whittingham told reporters during his weekly news conference. "He played so well, I mean, it's pretty much a given. We haven't had conversation with the team since the game because Sunday's their day off, but we'll cover all that. We'll cover a lot of that ground this morning."
Ohio State is cooked. Wake Forest is CFP-bound. Right?
Indeed, Carr is coming off a game in which he completed 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown in a 28-21 win vs. Rutgers. He also had 12 rushes for 54 yards and two more scores. He helped the Wolverines convert 12 of 16 third-down attempts (75%) and committed no turnovers.
"Liked everything about what he did," Whittingham said of Carr's day. "You talk about QBR, which is an ESPN analytic QB rating that takes into account not just throwing the ball, running the ball, taking sacks, the whole nine yards. He graded out, I think he was 91 or 92, and the top quarterback in the country right now is like 90 or 89. So bottom line is he played a complete game."
The question now is what's next for Underwood, who was removed at halftime of the Week 7 game vs. Penn State in favor of Carr. Whittingham was glowing of the former starter in how he handled being benched.
"I'm a fan of Bryce Underwood," Whittingham said of Underwood after his benching vs. the Nittany Lions. "He's a great person. He's got a great personality. You know, he's going to go far in life … he handled that as well as he possibly could have and as well as I've ever seen a starter that got replaced handle it. He was supporting Tommy. He was thrilled when Tommy scored.
"He was helping him on the sideline, talking through things that he saw on the previous possession, and so I don't think there's a chance or a way that he could have handled it any better than he did. Very pleased, very professional on his part, too."
Michigan takes on the Spartans on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. ET on Peacock.
