Things got heated near the end of the U.S. men's national team's 4-2 win over Chile on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
An exchange between Chile winger Leandro Hernández and USMNT goalkeeper Brian Schwake turned into a bench-clearing fight deep into second-half stoppage time.
After Mathis Albert had given the U.S. a 4-2 lead
, Schwake covered up a loose ball in the box. Hernández walked over and delivered a subtle, but intentional, kick at the goalkeeper.That set off a number of USMNT players, several of whom sprinted in to protect their goalkeeper.
Chris Richards was first on the scene and was quickly joined by Auston Trusty, Tyler Adams and Brooklyn Raines.
Eventually both benches cleared, with USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino getting involved to try and break
up the fight.
Richards and Hernández would both receive yellow cards for their role in the altercation.

After the final whistle, tempers would flare again as players once again clashed.
“Obviously they were frustrated. They were losing the game deservedly,” Richards said on TNT after the game.
“But then they went to our goalie and the kick went on the ground. I mean you’re on our home soil. That’s not gonna fly."
