SMU announced Thursday, Oct. 15, that it's launching the first Division I men's lacrosse program in Texas.
The program, which will officially begin competition in 2028, will become the ACC's sixth lacrosse program.
"This is a historic moment for SMU and for the sport of lacrosse," SMU athletic director Damon Evans said in the announcement."We are proud to be the first Division I school to bring men's lacrosse to Texas, a sport that has tremendous growth potential across our state. This is a bold investment that will bring another elite program to our campus, and we expect to compete and win immediately."
The Mustangs will enter the fray in a sport that has largely been dominated historically by the Northeast. It will immediately part of a conference
with some of the deepest roots in lacrosse, with the ACC currently being represented by Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia and Syracuse.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement, published by SMU:
"SMU President Jay Hartzell, Director of Athletics Damon Evans and the entire Mustang leadership team should be applauded for their substantial investment in, and continued commitment to, providing increased opportunities for student-athletes. The addition of men's lacrosse is an exciting step forward for SMU's athletics program and campus community. The ACC is widely recognized as the nation's premier men's lacrosse conference, and we look forward to welcoming the Mustangs to our men's lacrosse ranks."
The Mustangs noted the growing lacrosse landscape in Texas as one of the catalysts that led to this program development.
