NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Darrell Waltrip's family has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), a condition that affects his personality, behavior, emotions, and language. This diagnosis has led him to withdraw from public appearances.
In a statement to Fox Sports, Waltrip’s wife and family provided further details, explaining that he has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) potentially complicated by Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The family noted that these conditions could be linked to head injuries sustained throughout his racing career.
"While this disease will inevitably progress, thankfully, it is currently limited to some minor noticeable symptoms. As a result, he will be stepping
further away from the public limelight. Be assured, Darrell is happy and otherwise healthy – spending his time with his wife, Stevie, two daughters and his three young grandchildren. We are all grateful for your continued prayer, love and support!"
During his 28-year career, Waltrip captured three Cup Series championships and secured 84 Cup victories, ranking him fifth on NASCAR’s all-time wins list. Waltrip was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.
After retiring from driving, Waltrip transitioned to broadcasting, spending 19 years as a Fox Sports NASCAR analyst from 2001 until 2019.
What is Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD)?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), also known as frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), refers to a group of brain diseases that primarily affect the frontal and temporal lobes. These regions regulate personality, social behavior, decision-making and language skills.
In frontotemporal dementia, nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes progressively deteriorate, leading to shrinkage of these brain regions, a process known as atrophy. The specific symptoms of FTD depend on which part of the brain is most affected, but often include dramatic changes in personality, impulsivity, emotional blunting, difficulty with language and communication, and problems with executive function.
