The International Cycling Union (UCI) has announced the cancellation of a major BMX cycling qualifying event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which was set to bring together the world’s best riders in trials and BMX Freestyle as part of the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Urban Cycling World Championships, originally set for Nov. 3-7 in Riyadh, were called off following a bombing at the city’s airport last week by the Houthi rebel group that killed 12 and injured over 300 people.
These championships were intended to determine which two male and two female athletes in BMX Freestyle Park would advance to compete at the Los Angeles Games.
In an official statement, the UCI explained that the decision came after a joint assessment of the evolving
security situation in the region and its potential impact on the safety of athletes, staff and spectators. The governing body emphasized that the well-being of all participants was the top priority in making the call.
“The UCI regrets having to take this decision and expresses its appreciation to the Saudi Cycling Federation for their support and cooperation throughout preparations for the event. It also thanks the athletes, teams and National Federations for their understanding,” the International Cycling Union said.
The UCI promised to provide further updates about the sporting consequences of the cancellation.
