Amanda Peet's advice for protecting your health? Keep an eye out for the warning signs.
The actress and "Your Friends & Neighbors" star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last fall, opened up about the medical ordeal in a new interview on the "Today" show Thursday, Oct. 1.
"I feel great," Peet, 54, told host Savannah Guthrie, nine months after receiving her first clear scan in January. "I think about how lucky I was in so many ways."
Peet revealed her cancer battle in a March essay for The New Yorker. The actress said that in August 2025, she went in for a "routine scan" to monitor her "'dense' and 'busy' breasts." During the appointment, her physician discovered a small tumor on an ultrasound. A subsequent MRI showed Peet had a second tumor,
later determined to be benign.
However, Peet shared on the "Today" show that she first noticed something amiss with her breasts six months prior to her diagnosis.
"I was in my closet. I was probably putting something on, and I felt a weird – it just didn't feel like normal skin," Peet explained. "But it wasn't the frozen pea [shape] that everybody talks about."
Breast cancer, the second most common cancer among U.S. women, is a growth of cells that originates in the breast tissue, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms can include a breast lump, nipple changes and other abnormalities in the skin or shape of the breast.
Following her diagnosis, Peet’s Stage 1 breast cancer was treated with a lumpectomy, a surgery that removes tumors in the breast, as well as radiation, she shared in her New Yorker essay.
Peet opened up about her decision to go public with her health struggles in a March interview with USA TODAY.
"The truth is, I really didn't have an agenda that I can point to," Peet said. "I don't really know exactly why I started writing. I tried to write over the last 15 years or so. But I'm sure it was some kind of way to cope a little bit and to try to make sense of something that I couldn't make sense of."
Peet's "Your Friends & Neighbors" costar Olivia Munn, who also battled breast cancer, praised the actress for her candor.
"I was like, 'Gosh, your doctors were so great' because they found it so early in its development," Munn, in an interview with USA TODAY, recalled telling Peet. "And to catch it at that place is rare because so many women find it when it's at a different stage. Mine was all over both of my breasts, and she's just incredibly lucky. And for her to talk about that, it really spotlights to other women that early detection will save your life, and asking your doctor to make that a priority."
