A mother is dead and her baby was clinging to life after police said they were pushed off a New York City balcony on Oct. 7.
The New York City Fire Department told USA TODAY that crews responded at 3:40 a.m. ET for a report of a person thrown from a building in the city's Bronx borough.
Upon arrival, New York police officers, who also responded, said they found a 23-year-old woman and an 8-month-old girl with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position.
"Further investigation determined that both individuals had been pushed from a balcony," the NYPD told USA TODAY.
Emergency responders transported the infant in critical condition to a hospital, police said.
The baby's mother, identified by police as Nathaly Ramirez, was also take to a hospital,
where she was pronounced dead.
Police did not release suspect information in the case, and said that so far no arrests have been made.
