Fall has arrived in Washington DC, and this week's weather is a good example of what the season can bring.
The season is starting out chilly and rainy, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s, including rain expected Tuesday and Wednesday. But warmer weather will return, as temperatures climb back into the 70s by the weekend and into the high 70s by next week, according to Accuweather.
That kind of swing is common during the transition from summer to fall. DC can still see warm, humid days, but cooler air is beginning to move into the region more frequently.
Rain doesn't necessarily become more common, though. Summer tends to bring more thunderstorms, while fall rain is more often associated with passing weather systems and cold fronts.
Those cold
fronts can also lead to some of fall's biggest temperature swings. A warm, humid day can quickly give way to much cooler and drier air, making the weather feel dramatically different from one day to the next.
And as the weather gradually changes, so does the landscape. The first signs of fall color can appear in the DC area in early October, with peak foliage typically arriving later in October and into early November.
So while fall has officially arrived, don't put away your summer clothes just yet. DC will likely see plenty of warm days before the cooler, drier weather becomes more consistent.
