Indiana Fever free agent Sophie Cunningham weighed in on the team's changes at the top.
After two seasons leading the front office for one of the most scrutinized teams in the WNBA, Amber Cox is out as the general manager. Cox’s firing wasn’t the only shakeup within the organization as team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down as well.
"There was not a lot of warning, and that's OK," Cunningham said. "I think that's probably a good thing that you kind of keep it in house a little bit.
"Kelly and Amber, they're phenomenal, phenomenal people. They cared a lot about us as players, and as individuals outside the court. And so I have nothing but great things to say about them."
The Fever have major decisions to make this offseason. After a career-best
season – where she was second in the WNBA in scoring with 24.7 points a game – Kelsey Mitchell is a free agent and will likely command a max contract. Additionally, Cunningham, who ranked seventh in the league in 3-point shooting (41.9%) and third in points per scoring attempt (1.31), is also set to hit the open market.
"Hopefully, the Fever come in and bring people who can do a really good job for that program," Cunningham said. "I was blessed to be under Kelly and Amber, and I hope them the very best. And so we'll see what happens."
In two seasons with Cox deciding on the Fever’s roster construction, the team went 52-36 in the regular season and 5-6 in the postseason. Indiana was ousted in the first round of playoffs this season by the Las Vegas Aces.
