Hayden Panettiere, the former child actress best known for her roles in TV series like "Heroes" and "Nashville," died on Sunday, Aug. 16− and the news is hitting fans hard.
"I never cried so hard for a stranger in MY LIFE!!!" one user wrote on X.
On social media, tribute posts and comments of disbelief poured in. Panettiere, 36, also starred in "Ice Princess" alongside 2000s icon Michelle Trachtenberg, who died at 39 in 2025.
"First Michelle Trachtenberg now Hayden Panettiere I’m so sad I can’t believe this my Ice Princesses both gone," posted another fan. "My brain and heart are still processing this. I can't believe she's no more," one user chimed in.
It's not unusual that Panettiere's death is affecting some fans so deeply. Celebrity deaths can
feel personal, even if you never met the person. And while grief is different for everyone, experts say "collective" or "public grief" is a valid experience and can be exacerbated when the death of a public figure is learned unexpectedly in the news or on social media.
"When people experience sudden loss, they may feel shocked, disbelief, confused, and even in denial," Shavonne Moore-Lobban, licensed psychologist, previously told USA TODAY. "The suddenness of the loss may be too much to process and feel too unreal for a person to immediately grasp."
Many people also experience parasocial relationships with celebrities, a phenomenon frequently associated with fan culture, which can make a public figure's death feel even more real.
"It's a fascinating thing that people don't realize we really can grieve people we didn't know," David Kessler, grief expert and founder of Grief.com, previously told USA TODAY. "And it doesn't mean we're going to grieve them like our spouse or mother, father, or sister or child, but we will grieve them."
Hayden Panettiere had opened up about childhood months before her death
Before Panettiere died, the actress opened up in her memoir "This Is Me: A Reckoning" about childhood fame and her struggles with substance abuse. In recent interviews about the memoir, Panettiere said she was "groomed" to be a "little soldier" throughout her early career, which included roles in the soap opera "One Life to Live" and the animated film "A Bug's Life."
The timing of her death compounded the grief for some fans, who were particularly impacted by the memoir and some of Panettiere's recent comments and revelations.
The actress had also come out as bisexual in May 2026. "It was always the fear of not being perfect, and what my team was going to think about it, what the public’s opinion was going to be about it,” she told U.S. Weekly. “It’s sad that I had to wait till I was 36 years old to share that part of me, but better late than never, right?”
Some fans shared that quote online in the hours after the news broke about her passing: "This quote of Hayden Panettiere's from just a couple months ago is devastating. This is so tragic," one user wrote. "With the memoir and the interviews that came with it, I thought she was starting a new chapter. She didn't get the chance," another added.
How to navigate 'collective grief'
Grief looks different for everyone, and there's not one right or wrong way to navigate it. It's OK to grieve a person you didn't know − but always remember, they have real families and people in their lives mourning them too who may need privacy during this time.
Information on Panettiere's death is still being revealed, and a cause of death has not yet been shared. If you find yourself doomscrolling, it's OK to step back and put the phone down.
And, don't feel pressure to put a timeline on your grief.
"There is no limit to grief and because it is a cycle or process, it will continue as long as it needs to for the person who is experiencing it," Moore-Lobban said.
